There is something different about buying a wallet that was made in America.
Not because a label says “Made in USA,” but because behind that label is a person, a workshop, a set of skills, and a decision to make something locally rather than sending production halfway around the world.
At Dark Forest, we make leather wallets by hand in Portland, Oregon. Our wallets are made from full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather and produced in small batches with an emphasis on traditional craftsmanship.
What Does “Made in USA” Actually Mean?
“Made in USA” can mean more than simply assembling a product in the United States. For a small leather goods maker, it can mean cutting the leather, preparing the pieces, sewing, burnishing, stamping, finishing, and inspecting the final wallet right here in the workshop.
That hands-on process is a big part of what separates a handmade American wallet from a mass-produced alternative.
Every wallet passes through the hands of the person making it. Small variations are part of the process, not something to be hidden.
Why Full-Grain Vegetable-Tanned Leather?
Leather is the foundation of a wallet, so the material matters.
Full-grain leather retains the natural grain of the hide rather than being heavily sanded or corrected. Vegetable tanning uses tannins derived from natural plant sources to transform the hide into leather.
One of the things we appreciate most about vegetable-tanned leather is how it changes over time. Instead of trying to keep a wallet looking exactly the same, the leather develops character through use. Scratches, marks, darkening, and the natural patina become part of the story.
A wallet should look better after years of being carried than it did when it left the workshop.
A Minimalist Approach to Everyday Carry
A good wallet doesn't need to be complicated.
Our designs focus on carrying the things you actually use while keeping unnecessary bulk to a minimum. Whether you're looking for a minimalist wallet, a traditional bifold, or a simple everyday carry wallet, the goal is the same: make something functional, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed.
The best design is often the one that gets out of your way.
Why Buy an American Made Wallet?
Buying American-made goods is ultimately a choice about what you want to support.
It helps keep skilled manufacturing and craftsmanship alive in American workshops. It supports small businesses and the people who work for them. And it gives customers the opportunity to buy fewer things and choose better-made ones.
For us, American manufacturing isn't about making a product simply because it can be stamped “Made in USA.” It's about keeping the process close to home and maintaining control over the quality of what we make.
Made in Portland, Oregon
Dark Forest began with a simple appreciation for traditional craftsmanship: making things the way they used to be made, with quality materials and attention to detail.
Today, our leather wallets are made in our Portland workshop using traditional techniques, American leather, and equipment chosen for the job.
We don't believe a wallet needs to be complicated to be special.
It just needs to be made well.
