What Happened to Quality?
Most modern wallets are built for speed and cost reduction. Thin leather. Synthetic materials. Mass production. Cheap stitching. Painted edges hiding shortcuts.
A lot of wallets today are designed to look good on day one — but not year five.
Older leather goods were different. They were overbuilt because people expected them to last. Saddlery, work boots, tool belts, and wallets were made with durability first. Craftsmen cared about materials because their reputation depended on it.
That mindset inspired Dark Forest.
Handmade Leather Wallets Built the Traditional Way
Every wallet we make in our Portland workshop is built using methods rooted in old-school leather craftsmanship.
We use heavy full grain leather sourced from Herman Oak, one of the most respected vegetable tanneries in the United States. Their leather has been trusted for generations because it wears in instead of wearing out.
Unlike corrected leather or synthetic materials, full grain vegetable tanned leather develops a rich patina over time. Every scratch, crease, and mark becomes part of the story.
No two wallets age exactly the same.
Why We Hand Dye Our Leather
Most companies buy pre-finished leather in bulk.
We don’t.
At Dark Forest, we hand dye our leather in house because it gives us more control over the final character of every wallet. It also means each piece carries subtle variation and depth that machine-finished leather simply can’t replicate.
Hand dyeing creates warmth, richness, and natural pull-up tones that make a wallet feel alive instead of factory made.
It takes longer.
It’s messier.
But the final result feels real.
Built with a Vintage Landis #3
One of the most unique parts of our process is stitching with a vintage Landis #3 sewing machine.
This machine produces a traditional heavy stitch pattern that resembles classic hand stitching — something rarely seen in modern wallet production today. It’s slower than modern industrial equipment, but it creates a stronger and more timeless look that matches the spirit of old American craftsmanship.
The Landis machine is part of the soul of our workshop.
