How to Care for a Vegetable-Tanned Leather Wallet

One of the best things about vegetable-tanned leather is that it gets better with age. Unlike synthetic materials or heavily coated leathers, veg tan leather develops a rich patina that tells the story of years of daily use. With a little care, a quality leather wallet can last for decades.

At Dark Forest, every wallet is made from premium vegetable-tanned leather and comes with a complimentary tin of our handmade leather balm. We make the balm ourselves in our Portland workshop using all-natural ingredients selected to nourish and protect leather without harsh chemicals.

Simple Leather Care

1. Use Your Wallet

The best thing for vegetable-tanned leather is regular use. Natural oils from your hands help condition the leather and encourage a beautiful patina to develop over time.

2. Keep It Clean

If your wallet gets dusty or dirty, simply wipe it down with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners, soaps, or chemicals that can strip the leather of its natural oils.

3. Apply Leather Balm Occasionally

When the leather begins to feel dry, apply a small amount of leather balm with a clean cloth. A little goes a long way. Work it into the leather, allow it to absorb, and buff away any excess.

For most people, conditioning once or twice a year is plenty.

4. Don't Fear Scratches

Small scratches and marks are part of the character of vegetable-tanned leather. Many will soften and blend naturally with use, adding to the unique look of your wallet.

5. Avoid Excessive Moisture

Leather can handle everyday life, but prolonged exposure to water should be avoided. If your wallet gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature.

Leather That Gets Better With Time

A quality vegetable-tanned leather wallet isn't something you throw away after a few years. It's something that grows with you. The color deepens, the leather softens, and every mark becomes part of its story.

That's why we include our all-natural leather balm with every Dark Forest wallet—to help you care for your wallet for years to come and keep it looking its best.

Like they used to make 'em.
